Guidelines for Basic Dog Training

There are some procedures and commands to follow for basic dog training such as follows:

Teach your Dog to Sit

This is the most basic command to teach. Dog "sit" may sound simple. "Sit" or "down" is the most basic of all dog control commands. Every book of dog training tips starts with this basic command for a good reason. "Sit" is the foundation for learning all the other commands. When your dog successfully responds to "sit" and realizes he will be rewarded for doing as you ask, a huge conceptual hurdle has been overcome. Dogs are extremely intelligent and learn rapidly once they understand what it is you want them to do.

"Sit" can be taught in concert with "stay" but the two commands should be taught one at a time before you attempt a combination. Perhaps the best answer to the common question, "Can you teach me how to train my dog?" should be, "Yes, if you are willing to learn as well." Dog training is a two-way street and an important aspect of the human / pet bond. You need to learn to understand your dog as much as he needs to learn to understand you.

Reinforce all the Dog's Good Behaviors

Dogs are habit-oriented. The best time to train a dog is when they are young and acquiring those habits. You must always make it a point to reward your dog's every good behavior in order to reinforce the ones you want to see the dog exhibit over his lifetime.

You can do this verbally by saying "good" to him every time he does something right. A dog can recognize praise as intended. You can also reward the dog with a treat, though you may want to reserve this kind of praise for specific, active commands or actions so you don't wind up with an overweight dog!

Some Final Comments

Dogs like to please their owners, which is why they are so highly trainable. A dog can learn all these basic dog commands and more if he is rewarded accordingly, not just with praise and rewards but with your approval.

Although these dog-training fundamentals seem to be simple, there are cases in which owners will need to seek the help of experts. Behaviors like frequent jumping up, chewing, and aggressive displays may require professional intervention. Most veterinarian clinics or large retail pet stores can recommend qualified trainers in your area.

Even basic dog commands and training can test your will and patience. With persistence, however, you can stop dog barking and halt other undesirable behaviors. Begin with these basic dog training tips but don't hesitate to seek professional help. Training is an investment in your relationship with your best friend - your dog.
