Canine Obedience Training Demands Human Skills

Canine obedience training requires human skills too. The success of your dog obedience training does not rely mainly on the ability of your dog to respond to you. Much of the process relies on your ability to get ideas through to the dog.

You can consult obedience training books to help you out, but some of the key qualities required of a dog trainer include:

Patience

If you have a low tolerance level, you cannot successfully train your dog on your own. Some dogs are hard to teach, while some appear to be especially intelligent and make rapid progress. Dog training is nothing so much as it is a test of will and patience - yours and your dog's.

Humor

Laugh. Have fun. Make the training as light as it can be for both you and the dog. Dogs love to play. Make it clear to the dog that you are enjoying yourself and taking pleasure in his company. You will see that the training results will be more impressive when it's clear to the dog that you want to be with him.

Your dog has different needs just as you do. He also has an entirely different view of the world and a set of behaviors that correspond to that view. You have to understand that these animals do not have a good sense of what is right and what is wrong as you define those terms. You must help them to understand what you want them to do and not do and to be firm but gentle and kind at all times.

Consistency

In every aspect of your dog training, be consistent. Use the same vocabulary, follow the same routines, and reward the dog for the same "correct" behaviors. Do not confuse your dog. It is an intelligent creature but its understanding to your vocabulary is limited to what you teach it.

If you think you do not possess all of these qualities or are lacking in some areas, you might want to consider consulting a professional trainer. Try to book dog obedience training sessions with an instructor whose personality fits your own and that of your dog. You may want to have a preliminary meeting to find out about the trainer's credentials and philosophy and how long he has been conducting obedience training for dogs.

Request to observe a training session before you agree to work with a trainer. Does he like humans and dogs? Does he give clear instructions? Does he teach the dog at a good pace? These are all the hallmarks of a good trainer.

Dog obedience training is a lot of work but no one ever regrets the time and energy spent in puppy obedience training. After all, your dog is your best friend.
