Steps to Combat Dog Leashes and Collars-Related Problems

Leash training for dogs should start when your dog is a puppy. As soon as you can, start getting your puppy used to having a collar and leash placed on it. Teach it the sit/stay command, as this will be very helpful when you are puppy leash training.

If your dog is already past puppy stage, you should start dog leash training as soon as possible. Even if your dog has already developed leash-related problems, stick with the routine of walking your dog regularly. Take some steps to correct the problem and be prepared to continue with your correction techniques until you see some improvement in your dog's walking behavior.

Here are some dog walking tips that may be used on dogs with leash-related problems, and those that you are beginning to leash train:

  • Walk your dog regularly. Your dog is more likely to be well behaved if it does not have to wait a long time between walks. It also gives you more time in which to correct problems.
  • If your dog starts to pull and jerk, do not continue to walk. If your dog knows the sit/stay command, make him sit for five minutes before proceeding. If your dog will not sit then return to the house.
  • Teach your dog to sit calmly while you place him on the leash. Do not put the leash on your dog until it is sitting.
  • Consider buying a collar that will cause discomfort for the dog when it pulls or jerks.
  • Remain calm at all times. Do not become frustrated or anxious, as your dog will sense these emotions.
  • Praise your dog for good walking behavior.

Leash Laws

Learning good leash behavior is a necessity. You need to train your dog to walk on a leash in order to give it the exercise it needs. Many areas have leash laws, and dog owners may face fines if they walk their dog without a leash. Plus, walking a dog without a leash creates a possible danger, either to your or to other people. Unleashed dogs can run in front of cars, attack other dogs or people or run away. It is much safer to keep your dog on a leash where you can control him.

Where Can You Get Help?

If you still can't get your dog to walk on a leash properly, you may need to consider outside help. If you have not taken your dog to training lessons before, think about this as a first step. You may also like to think about professional dog trainers, who can work individually with your dog and leash-train, walk him. Another consideration is the type of leash and collars you use. Special dog leashes and collars are available that help with dogs who have problem walking and give their owner more control.
