Basic Dog Training Tools

In order for you to train your dog properly, you must have proper dog training supplies like dog whistles and dog clickers. The exact tool you need depends on the role your dog will play in your life. For family pets you will probably need nothing more than a leash and collar.
Working dogs, on the other hand, will need to be trained with specialized equipment that will continue to be utilized throughout their "careers."

Primary Dog Training Tools

Collars and leashes are the primary tools of any dog training regimen. Every dog, either a working dog or a household pet should have these. A lot of dog owners and trainers prefer to have two sets of each, one for simple pleasure walks and the other for working or training purposes. The dog will quickly learn the distinction and get in the right mindset just from seeing which equipment its owner picks up.

A dog leash that is used mainly for pleasure is made out of soft nylon and is more or less four feet long. A pleasure collar, is usually made out of a simple adjustable leather strap. When choosing a collar for your dog, make sure the fit is right. A proper collar should neither be too tight or too loose. To determine the exact measurement, try to slip one finger between the collar and the dog's neck. If your finger slips easily into the space, then the collar is right.

Training collars are often metal chains with a ring on one end through which the other end is passed. Sometimes called a "choke collar," this configuration has stirred controversy as an overly harsh device. A martingale collar is composed of two loops, the larger one placed on the dog's neck attached to a D ring on the smaller loop. When the dog tries to escape, tension is created and pulls the small loop, thus tightening the large loop. The effect is less harsh than with a choke collar and consequently martingales have become the preferred choice for training and show purposes. (Training leases are at least six feet in length to allow for training moves.)
