Best of the Best: Show Dogs

It's a whole different world - dog show equipment, dog trainers, entry fees, transport fees, dog show supplies. It's the world of international dog shows and it isn't for the faint-hearted. Dog shows can be rabidly competitive and expensive but for many people it's all worth it just to have the chance to show their champion companions and to earn recognition for the excellence of their animals.

Major U.S. Dog Shows

There are many different dog shows in the United States, from small local competitions, to national and international events. You can find the competitions that are coming up by searching a site like The American Kennel Club's home page (akc.org), which has a detailed list of dog shows for the coming year. The major shows include:
  • Dog Show USA
  • Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
  • AKC/Eukanuba National Championship
  • Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows

Prize Money

The prize money at dog shows varies depending on the type of dog show and the level and scope of the competition. International dog shows offer considerable prize money. The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship dispenses some $225,000 in prize money, for instance. Naturally amounts at smaller shows are less.

The Expense of Showing Dogs

Showing dogs can be quite expensive. First of all, there is the cost of a dog, which is high for a champion quality bloodline. Then there are all the additional costs of caring for your dog, taking him to shows and buying all the necessary dog show equipment. These costs may include:
  • Entry fees
  • Transportation
  • Appropriate crates
  • Dog show leads
  • Special dog show training sessions
  • Special performance enhancing diets
Even if your dog wins a lot of shows, you may find that it does not nearly cover the costs of taking your dog to shows.

Training the Animals

Most owners will do at least some of the training of their show dogs themselves. It is important that the owners spend time training the animal so it knows who is in charge. However, a professional dog trainer may also be used who will not only train the animal but actually show the dog for the owner. A good dog trainer will know what the judges in the dog show will be looking for and will help to maximize the animal's chances of winning.
