Outstanding Canine Heroes: Search and Rescue Dogs

Search and rescue dogs (including some police dogs) can play an important role in emergencies. They are used to help search for and to rescue people who may be lost or trapped. Search and rescue dogs are dogs are trained specifically to help find people. When people are located, rescue operations can begin.
These dogs literally have a life-saving role to play in the community, and many people owe their lives to remarkable canine search and rescue teams. For instance, search and rescue dogs played a vital role in rescuing people after 9/11 and during the post-Hurricane Katrina rescue operations in August 2005.

However, dogs are not only used to search for live people. In many cases, police and search teams are looking for bodies. Cadaver dogs are special dogs trained to search for bodies. They can not only locate fresh corpses, but those that have been buried for some length of time. Consequently, cadaver dogs play an important role in solving missing persons cases thus allowing the families to bury their dead and the criminals to be apprehended.

Dogs Used in Search and Rescue Work

Many different dogs can be used in search and rescue work, provided they have the right temperament and abilities and can be trained to carry out the work in an effective manner. However, some breeds have proved to be specifically suited to the task of search and rescue operations. These dogs include:
  • Bloodhounds
  • Newfoundlands
  • German Shepherds
  • Belgian Malinois
  • Golden Retrievers

Characteristics of a Good Search and Rescue Dog

Search and rescue dogs need to possess some special and important characteristics that to perform their work.
  • They should be obedient dogs that respond well to commands.
  • They should remain under control at all times regardless of the environment in which they find themselves.
  • They should respond quickly to verbal and hand commands.
  • They should have a superior rapport with their handler.
  • They should have a keen sense of smell and be able to distinguish their target scent from overlying odors regardless of weather conditions.

Essential Search and Rescue Dog Commands

Training search rescue dogs and police dogs is a critical process. They need to respond instantly and obediently to a large number of commands given verbally or as hand signals. Commands that need to be mastered include:
  • Heel
  • Jog
  • Sit (at a distance of at least 10 meters)
  • Recall (from a distance of at least 15 meters)
  • Down (at a distance of at least 10 meters)
