How to Housebreak a Puppy

Puppy potty training is the first and most basic lesson in cohabitation you will teach your dog. While parents of children may think they know how to potty train, puppy minds don't work the same way as toddler minds. The goal is the same but the necessary steps are a bit different.

When a puppy needs to "go," it is the most natural thing in the world for him to just do what he needs to do. Re-channeling that natural instinct into learned elimination behavior requires time, effort and consistency on the part of the dog owner but the process is absolutely necessary.

How to Housebreak a Puppy

By following some basic guidelines, you can make the housebreaking process an easier one for both you and your pet. Keep in mind, however, that if you and your dog have been working on this issue for several weeks with no progress, a medical issue may be involved. If your puppy simply is not getting the hang of housebreaking and is having too many accidents, don't hesitate to visit your veterinarian. A nasty urinary infection could be the real root of the problem. In the absence of a medical issue, however, the follow principles are key to the process.

Choose a Specific Area

Designate a specific area of your yard or garden as an appropriate place for the dog to do his duties. If you are an apartment dweller, you will need to not only commit yourself to taking your dog out regularly but to also taking the appropriate materials with you to clean up after him. Some apartment dwellers will provide their dog with an inside area covered in newspapers or "puppy pads" as an acceptable place to "go" in the event of an emergency. This isn't a bad idea. Your dog isn't going to be able to suspend his natural functions just because you got off work late.
