When you take the time to train your dog to regard his crate as home base you are not punishing or imprisoning him but actually providing him with a small bit of territory that is just his. That first night, however, may be hard. When you bring a young puppy home and put him in his crate - alone - and turn off the light, there will be whining and crying. It will break your heart. Stand firm. Plug up your ears. But don't take that puppy out of that crate.

If the puppy learns that he can get you to come by raising a ruckus, he'll just get louder and louder. An old trick, and one that works, is to take an old-fashioned wind-up alarm clock and wrap it in a towel you've warmed just a bit. The puppy will liken the ticking and the warmth to snuggling up against its mother's beating heart. Also, don't put a new puppy in its crate and then sit up in the next room and talk. Go to the other end of the house and be quiet. Don't give the puppy a reason to be even more agitated at being left alone. It will only take a few nights of this before the little dog settles down immediately when he's taken to his "room" for the night.

By following basic guidelines for crate training puppies, this first step in having a well-behaved companion should proceed smoothly. In crate training your dog you not only enhance the housebreaking process but increase your peace of mind and the dog's.
