A mean-looking dog may be an effective deterrent to intruders, but it does not mean they will be able to be trained to alert their owners to intruders and to attack when necessary.
"Guard dogs should only be for protection." This myth goes to the fact that many people buy dogs solely on their performance as a guard dog, and refuse to consider them as a pet. The best guard dogs will be dogs that love their owners and that will want to protect them.
