Intro to the World of Guard Dogs

The best guard dogs serve to protect people and property. Dogs that are trained for protection purposes are also used by police in tracking and apprehension of criminals. The term "guard dog" may also refer to watch dogs or guard dogs. Watch dogs are trained only to bark when an intruder enters the territory they are guarding.
Guard dogs (for example, livestock guard dogs) may attack intruders. Trained guard dogs for sale may include dogs that are trained only to bark or those that are also trained to attack.

Common security dogs include Dobermans, German shepherds, Rottweilers, bullmastiffs and pit bulls. Some of these dogs often get the reputation for being mean. However, although they may be trained to attack intruders, all of these animals can be loving and affectionate towards their owners and many are good with children. The best guard dogs are highly disciplined and well-trained animals that perform an important function for their owners.

Common Mistakes about Guard Dogs for Personal Protection

There are a number of other misconceptions about guard dogs and their role as protectors. Unfortunately, some people look for what they consider the top guard dogs, based on these misconceptions. Understanding the truth behind these false concepts will guarantee that you are better able to pick the right guard dog for your needs.
  • "Big is better." There is no truth to the statement that big dogs are better than small ones. Small dogs can be just as effective as larger dogs, providing they are well-trained and the right type of breed to perform protective work.
  • "Mean dogs are better." A mean-looking dog may, in fact, be a less effective guard dog, as they may be harder to train. A mean-looking dog may be an effective deterrent to intruders, but it does not mean they will be able to be trained to alert their owners to intruders and to attack when necessary.
  • "Guard dogs should only be for protection." This myth goes to the fact that many people buy dogs solely on their performance as a guard dog, and refuse to consider them as a pet. The best guard dogs will be dogs that love their owners and that will want to protect them.

What Do Police Dogs Do?

  • locating drugs, bombs and other contraband items
  • tracking missing people
  • tracking offenders
  • helping to subdue offenders
  • guarding their handlers
